The Solar Eclipse Prayer

In shā Allah, today will be a partial solar eclipse over Tampa. It will begin at 1:43 PM and end at 4:15 PM.

The Salat Al-Kusuf, or eclipse prayer, is a sunnah prayer prescribed for all that can pray, young or old, man or woman. The maximal sunnah is to pray the entire time of the event (~2.5 hrs in this case), but to at least extend the prayer as long possible and make abundant dua.
It is preferred to pray in congregation, but may be prayed individually.

The madhahib differ on how the Salah is performed:

The Hanafi Madhab

It will be prayed just like any two rakat Salah but with the Intention for the eclipse prayer. The standing (Qiyam), bowing (ruku’), and prostration (sujud) are all extended significantly. It recommended for the Salah to be silent.

The Maliki, Shafi, and Hanbali Madhabs
It is a two rakat Salah with the intention of eclipse prayer with two qiyam and two rukus in each rakat. Like the hanafis, one will extend the Salah as much as possible until the end of the eclipse. The Salah should not be done out loud.

If one is unable to take out long period of time, then he should any amount he can, even it is two-three mins.

DONT LEAVE THE SUNNAH

If one is praying behind an imam of a different madhab or praying another acceptable way, then you will follow him.

If the prayer is done in congregation in the masjid, then a khutbah should be given.

Allah knows best.

Mufti Omar Nagi
