Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim

The Duʿā at the end of the recitation of the Qurʾān is established and emphasized.

Dalīl from the Prophet ﷺ

1. On the authority of ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn RadiAllahu ʿanhu that he once passed by someone reading the Qurʾān then made duʿā (after finishing). Then (ʿImrān RA) came back and said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: Whoever reads the Qurʾān, then let him beg Allah (in duʿā), for indeed a people will come who will beg people by (the recitation of the Qurʾān). (Tirmidhī)This ḥadīth shows us that making duʿā after any recital of the Qurʾān is desirable, and the duʿā at the completion of the Qurʾān is even more preferred.

2. On the authority of ʿIrbāḍ b. Sāriyah RA, the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever completes the (recitation of) the Qurʾān, his duʿā will be accepted. (Ṭabrānī)

3. On the authority of Anas RA, the Prophet ﷺ would gather his family and make duʿā at the completion of the Qurʾān.

4. On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās RA, the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever reads (the Qurʾān) until he completes it, his duʿā will be accepted. (Qurṭubī)

5. A narration of Bayhaqī mentions “Every khatm has an accepted duʿā”.

6. Another narration of Bayhaqī has that “the Prophet ﷺ would make the following duʿā when completing:

اللهم ارحمني بالقرآن واجعله لي إماما ونورا وهدى ورحمة، اللهم ذكرني منه ما نسيت وعلمني ما جهلت وارزقني تلاوته آناء الليل واجعله لي حجة يا رب العالمين

O Allah have mercy upon me through the Qurʾān and make it a leader, a light, a guidance, and a mercy for me. Oh Allah remind me that which I have forgotten, and teach me that of which I am ignorant, and provide me with its recitation at night, and make it a proof for me, O Lord of the worlds.

Dalīl from the Ṣaḥābah (Companions)

1. Anas RA would appoint someone to go and wait for people to finish reciting the Qurʾān so that he can join them to witness the completion and duʿā. (Musnad Dārimī)

2. Another narration has it that he would also bring anyone who was sitting with him to go witness the khatm. (Qurṭubī)

3. It is also narrated from Anas RA that he would “gather his family at the competition of the Qurʾān and make duʿā”.

4. Other narrations add that he would make duʿā for his family. (Ṭabrānī, Ibn Abī Dāwūd)

5. And other narrations mention that Anas RA would say “Duʿā at the completion of the Qurʾān is accepted” (Abū Dāwūd)

6. Ibn Masʿūd RA would also gather his family and the would say Amīn to his duʿās. (Ibn ʿUbayd)

Dalīl from the Tābiʿīn (Students of the Companions) and ʿUlamā.

1. Mujāhid, ʿAbdah, and Ḥakm b. ʿUtaybah, all great  tābiʿīn, are reported to make duʿā after a khatm.

2. Imam Ahmad would gather his family at the completion of the Qurʾān and make duʿā.

Collective Duʿā

As well, narrations of Bukhārī and Muslim state that the Prophet ﷺ would call everyone to gather at the duʿā of the Muslims on Eid, even the women in their menses were asked to come (this was because Eid took place outside of the masjid). This is clear that on momentous occasions duʿā should be made and people should also gather and attend and hope to get the blessings of the gathering, the pious, and virtuous deeds.Allah knows best.

May Allah guide us to what He loves. Ameen.

Zakat Al-Fitr Basics

Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim

Ibn ʿAbbās said, “Rasulullah prescribed the zakāh relating to the breaking of the fast as a purification of the fasting from useless speech and obscene talk and as food for the poor.” (Abu Dawud)

Ibn ʿAbbās said at the end of Ramadan, “Give the ṣadaqat al-fiṭr. Rasulullah ﷺ prescribed this sadaqah as a ṣāʿ of dried dates or barley, or half a sa' of wheat payable on behalf of every free man or slave, male or female, young or old." (Abu Dawud and Nasa’i)

وقال عمر وابن مسعود وروي عن علي: إذا وسّع الله فوسّعواʿ

Umar and Ibn Masʿūd Radiallahu Anhuma said: “If Allah has given you more, than give more.” (Ibn Ḥibbān)

What is it?

Where the fast of Ramadan stretches to one month, many mistakes or slips may occur. Sadaqat al-fiṭr, also known as zakat al-fiṭr or fiṭrah, is a means of purification of those mistakes, just as one who makes a mistake in ṣalāh must make sajdat al-sahw (prostration of forgetfulness).

Who owes it?

This sadaqah is mandated for those who have the means for the day of Eid.

When is it due?

One may pay it during the month of Ramadan. This zakat, however, becomes obligatory on the night before the Eid prayer and should be dispersed before the prayer. If one is unable, then he has until the maghrib of the Eid day. And if he misses that still, he must pay it and is sinful.

Who receives it?

Anyone qualified to accept zakah may accept sadaqat al-fitr.

And Allah knows best.
